RECRUITMENT COUNSELORS. WHO ARE THEY?
For many colleges, Panhellenic hosts an orientation the day before you meet the sororities. At orientation,
You meet your recruitment counselor.
You meet your recruitment group.
You learn about sorority recruitment [the structure and expectations].
You receive your t-shirt for the required t-shirt round [if applicable].
What’s a recruitment counselor?
She is a member of a sorority on your campus, BUT she has disaffiliated from her sorority. She is there to help you throughout the process — your support system. She is there to answer all your questions. She is like your big sister.
What’s a recruitment group?
It is a group of potential new members with the same recruitment counselor. Usually, the groups are made based on your last name or dorm.
Why do you have a recruitment counselor and recruitment group?
It is a way for you to have a more personal sorority recruitment experience. Think of it like summer camp. You are not free and left to figure everything out on your own. You have a camp counselor to help guide you. The same idea applies to sorority recruitment. Recruitment counselors are there to help your experience.
Does every sorority have members who are recruitment counselors?
Yes, every sorority has a member who is a recruitment counselor. These women have to apply for this position. Then, they are interviewed by Panhellenic.
What are they called?
It really depends on your college. Here are some of the common examples:
Gamma Chi
Pi Chi
Rho Gamma
Will you know what sorority your recruitment counselor is in?
NO. The recruitment counselors ONLY reveal what sororities they are in on Bid Day.
Why will you not know what sororities they are in?
The recruitment counselors keep their sorority affiliations secret because they do not want to sway you throughout recruitment. For example, if you like your recruitment counselor and know which sorority she is in, you may join that sorority because you like her.
They are required to disaffiliate before sorority recruitment starts. Each recruitment counselor goes through all her social media and deletes photos showing her affiliation. Also, she cannot talk to ANY of her sorority sisters throughout sorority recruitment.
What is their purpose in sorority recruitment?
These women are there to help you with all facets of sorority recruitment. They are essentially like your big sister and confidant. You can share all your feelings and secrets with your recruitment counselor. She does not tell anyone what you are going through.
Some of their jobs include:
They give out all the daily schedules.
They make sure you arrive at the sororities on time.
If the sorority asks for them to put the potential new members in a specific order for the round, they will do it.
They are there to offer advice.
They are a shoulder to cry on.
They call you if you get dropped from all of the sororities.
They are there to make your experience easier.
Why are they helpful?
They have advice to share with you. They understand your hardships. They understand what it feels like to be dropped. They get it.
They do not influence you to join a certain sorority. They are there to help you. If you have any questions about sorority recruitment, make sure to ask them. There are no silly questions. It could be anything. Like what to wear, what to talk about, deciding between your top two sororities, questions about voting, etc. You can ask them anything.
DO YOUTUBE AND TIKTOK HELP YOU STAND OUT OR GAIN RUSH CRUSH STATUS DURING SORORITY RECRUITMENT?
When you depend on Youtube and TikTok for advice, you prepare like everyone else. When you look like everyone else, you do not stand out. If a sorority can only invite back 30% of all PNMs, how will you show them that you deserve to be in the top 30%?
Instead of using advice and being the Overlooked Potential New Member, you want to use a step-by-step plan to gain Rush Crush status -- stand out, have options, and run home to a sorority you love. Click the video below to see how CRUSH [sorority recruitment coaching] can help you create and implement your plan.
You have a math test in two weeks that is worth 90% of your grade for the class. You want to get an A. You are looking for guidance on how to get your A.
First, you ask a friend, not in your math class, “How do I get an A+ on my test?” She says, “You need to study.” This answer leaves you frustrated.
Then, you ask your teacher, “How do I get an A+ on my test?” She gives you a step-by-step plan.
Who was more helpful?
Your teacher, right?
To get an A, you need to know the right information and have a step-by-step plan.
To get a bid to a sorority you love, you have to communicate you are the right fit for the sorority before and during sorority recruitment. A step-by-step plan tells you how and when to communicate.
BUT… why do so many women going through sorority recruitment ONLY use the advice they find on Youtube and TikTok? Does it help them stand out and get a bid?
