WHY YOU NEED TO REACH OUT TO GIRLS AT YOUR COLLEGE
You are on Instagram, and an ad pops up for a new restaurant in town. Would you go? Maybe, but how do you know if you will like it?
What if for that same restaurant, your friend says, “Have you heard of the new restaurant? It is so delicious! The staff is amazing, and the atmosphere is incredible. You feel like you are in Europe!”
Now, would you go? Absolutely!
The same idea applies to sorority recruitment. If a member talks about a potential new member and how she is perfect for the sorority, everyone listens. They trust the member’s opinions.
If you know members, it is necessary to reach out to them and include them in your sorority recruitment experience.
What not to say when reaching out
There are only two things not to say when you reach out.
How do I get a bid to your sorority?
I want to join your sorority and only your sorority.
When you reach out, the goal is to have a genuine conversation about sorority recruitment and show interest in the sorority. When you include them in your sorority recruitment experience, they start to talk about you. Now, all of her friends know who you are and are rooting for you.
Reaching out is NOT DIRTY RUSHING.
What is dirty rushing?
As a potential new member, you CANNOT get in trouble for dirty rushing. ONLY members can get in trouble.
Dirty rushing is when a member buys things to bribe you to join her sorority.
In 2020, NPC changed the contact rules for sorority recruitment.
The members CAN send you a DM on Instagram.
They CAN follow you on Instagram.
They CAN engage in conversation with you.
If a member contacts you, I highly encourage you to respond and network with them. If you do not engage in conversation, they may assume you are uninterested in joining the sorority. If they make this assumption, there are no guarantees that you would be invited back to the sorority. Why would members keep someone that does not want to join?
who can you reach out to?
You want to reach out to all members you know at your university. If you know someone a couple of years older than you from high school, reach out to her. If your best friend’s cousin is in a sorority at your college, reach out to her. If you went to summer camp with a member, reach out to her. If your sister’s friend is in a sorority, reach out to her. Reach out to everyone you know.
These women will be so excited to hear from you and want to help you get your bid.
How many MEMBERs should you reach out to?
As many as possible! The more people who are saying how amazing you are, the better!
Benefit of reaching out
More members know your name
When members find out you are going through sorority recruitment, they root for you. They tell all of their friends about you. Then, when you go through sorority recruitment, her friends are on the lookout for you. If you talk to one of them, you may receive a better score.
Why might you get a better score?
They love the member who is rooting for you and trust her opinion.
Think of it this way. If your best friend told you, “I met this great girl. She is so much fun! I think we would all be great friends. Can she come to lunch with us?” you would say, “Of course!!” Since your friend thinks she is great, you go to lunch excited and optimistic. You trust her opinion.
The same goes for sorority recruitment. If a member vouches for you, the other members know she looks out for the best interest of the sorority. They are excited to meet you. Also, the members know some information about you. This information helps them know what to talk to you about and builds a connection with you. Connections help you stand out and find your dream sorority.
DO YOUTUBE AND TIKTOK HELP YOU STAND OUT OR GAIN RUSH CRUSH STATUS DURING SORORITY RECRUITMENT?
When you depend on Youtube and TikTok for advice, you prepare like everyone else. When you look like everyone else, you do not stand out. If a sorority can only invite back 30% of all PNMs, how will you show them that you deserve to be in the top 30%?
Instead of using advice and being the Overlooked Potential New Member, you want to use a step-by-step plan to gain Rush Crush status -- stand out, have options, and run home to a sorority you love. You have a math test in two weeks that is worth 90% of your grade for the class. You want to get an A. You are looking for guidance on how to get your A.
First, you ask a friend, not in your math class, “How do I get an A+ on my test?” She says, “You need to study.” This answer leaves you frustrated.
Then, you ask your teacher, “How do I get an A+ on my test?” She gives you a step-by-step plan.
Who was more helpful?
Your teacher, right?
To get an A, you need to know the right information and have a step-by-step plan.
To get a bid to a sorority you love, you have to communicate you are the right fit for the sorority before and during sorority recruitment. A step-by-step plan tells you how and when to communicate.
BUT… why do so many women going through sorority recruitment ONLY use the advice they find on Youtube and TikTok? Does it help them stand out and get a bid?
