Every sorority has its own legacy policy. Each policy explains who is considered a legacy and if the legacy receives special treatment. In 2020, many of the sororities dropped legacy perks or changed the legacy policies.
Have you looked at your college’s Panhellenic website?
Did it give you a plan for getting a bid?
Did it tell you how to answer the members’ questions?
Did it tell you what the members are looking for in a new member?
MOST LIKELY, NO.
Many of these websites give FACTUAL information. This lack of information leaves many potential new members feeling behind on preparing for sorority recruitment, missing important information, having a disadvantage. Can you relate?

Are you a legacy?
For most sororities, you are considered a legacy if you have a sister, mother, or grandmother who was initiated into the sorority. Some sororities do consider aunts, step-sisters, and step-mothers to give legacy status.
Why is a legacy important?
Legacies are important to a sorority because they allow family ties to continue.
Once the sorority knows about your legacy status, you might be given special consideration. Some sororities guaranteed invitations after the first round of cuts (automatically invited to Round 2 of sorority recruitment), and some even put you on the top of the Bid Day List (If you make it to Pref, you are guaranteed a bid).
Will a legacy be guaranteed a bid?
There are many legacies going through sorority recruitment each year. The sororities cannot guarantee all legacies a spot in the sorority.
Each sorority’s main concern in sorority recruitment is to find friends. They are looking for women they connect with.
It is important to remain open-minded throughout sorority recruitment. You need to find your people. Do not join a sorority only because you are a legacy.
How many legacies does a sorority take for each membership class?
It depends on the sorority and the college. The sororities look for new members who fit in the sorority culture. They cannot guarantee anyone a spot in the sorority.
What is the difference between a small college vs a large college?
Usually, sorority recruitment at a smaller college is not as competitive as a larger college. It may be easier to join as a legacy at a smaller college.
What if you are a double legacy or triple legacy?
Most sororities describe a double legacy as someone whose mother and grandmother are initiated into the same sororities. It does NOT have to be at the same college (just needs to be the SAME sorority).
Here is an example. Your mom was a Delta Nu and your grandmother was a Delta Nu. Then, you are a double legacy for Delta Nu.
A triple legacy is someone who has three generations in the same sorority.
As a double or triple legacy, you are given a little more prestige. However, the sorority cannot guarantee you a bid.
What is a direct legacy?
A direct legacy is a potential new member who goes through sorority recruitment:
at the SAME college as her sister, mother, or grandmother
her sister, mother, or grandmother was in a sorority at that college
Here is an example. You are going through sorority recruitment at the University of Alabama. Your mom was Delta Nu at the University of Alabama. Then, you are a direct legacy for Delta Nu at the University of Alabama.
Should you tell the sorority you are a legacy?
One of the main pitches throughout sorority recruitment is talking about your legacy status UNPROMPTED by a question.
Why is talking about these topics pitching?
Imagine Sam is at a job interview for a big company. During her interview, the interviewer asks, “Why do you want to work here?” She says, “My mom works here, and I want to work at the same company.”
Do you think this statement will get her the job?
No. The same idea applies to sorority recruitment. Your legacy status can help you get invited to Round 2, but it cannot guarantee that you will receive a bid.
Why will it sound like a pitch?
You are explaining why you would be a good member -- You will be a good member because you are a legacy. The members do not care if you are a legacy. They want to find friends. If you tell them you are a legacy, it will not help them see you in the sorority. The only time to bring up your legacy status is during Pref [last round of sorority recruitment].
Additionally, if you are a legacy for ABC, and you are at XYZ. If you tell XYZ you are a legacy for ABC, they will drop you.
Why are some legacies dropped after the first round?
There are a couple of reasons a legacy might get dropped after the first round.
The legacy does not meet the GPA requirement. Sororities take GPAs very seriously. It is extremely important to them.
Some sororities do not guarantee invites after the first round. The sororities would rather drop you and let you look at the other options, rather than drag you along and give you false hope.
The woman who gave you legacy status is not in good standings with the sorority.
